In a Nutshell
While the bottles come from various bottling factories they do not have a long life span and most end up in a landfill. Most bottled water comes in recyclable PET plastic bottles, but only about 13 percent of the bottles we use get recycled. In the US in 2005, 2 million tons of plastic water bottles ended up clogging landfills instead of getting recycled.
Changing bottles can pose threats when the chiller tank is exposed to the environment. Changing bottles is not only a WHS issue from lifting 15 kilograms but could wipe out an entire work force should the person changing the bottle at the time just happened to be infected with a flu virus and sneezed during this daunting operation.
There are so many opportunities for bacteria, and other “nasties” to enter the water supply when bottles are used.
It’s an acknowledged problem – so much so that the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) recommends that bottled water coolers be cleaned and sanitized regularly.
Although the Australian Bottled Water Institute claims that all plastic bottles are recycled in reality this is not correct and less than half of PET bottles are actually recycled. The remaining 60% find their way to landfill and the US based Pacific Institute estimates that double the water is used in producing bottled water than is contained within the bottle itself.
Clean Up Australia statistics add that plastic bottles are amongst the most common of rubbish objects collected on Clean Up Australia Day and they actively discourage their use in place of a reusable replacement.
What are Plastic Bottle Made of?
Recent research into plastic bottles suggests that there is cause for concern and they should be monitored closely. Recent studies have exposed that chemicals called phthalates, are known to disrupt testosterone and other hormones as they leach into bottled water over time.
With bottled water, you don’t know how long the bottles have been sitting in the warehouse before they reach the display units. One study found that water that had been stored for 10 weeks in plastic bottles which contained phthalates and even if not from the bottle they could be from the bottle cap itself.
There are regulatory standards limiting phthalates in tap water but there are no legal limits for phthalates in bottled water and on top of this, bottled water is costing the planet 314,000 barrels of oil a year. This is a big concern.
